TRLL 2026 Play Progression Guidelines – Baseball


Day(s) of the week each age group plays (2026)

8U and Below

Clinic (Kindergarten / 6U)

View Rules
  • Game Days: Saturdays (may change)
  • Number of Games: N/A
  • Innings / Time Limit: 60 minutes (recommend 3–4 skill stations per session)
  • Pitching: Batting tee and/or coach pitch. An optional slingshot machine is allowed. Teach pitching without live batters at practices.
  • Batting: Recommend as many swings as needed.
  • Fielding: Rotate through all drills/stations. No catchers. Any type of baseball may be used (regular or soft ball recommended), but both teams must use the same type.
  • Base Running: Practice basics (running through 1st base, contact running, stopping on bases).
  • Umpires: None
  • Scorekeeping: No scorekeeping or reporting
  • Playoffs: None

Farm (1st Grade / 7U)

View Rules
  • Game Days: Mondays / Saturdays
  • Number of Games: 10
  • Innings / Time Limit: 6 innings (approximately 60 minutes)
  • Pitching: April: coach pitch. May: Continue coach pitch unless both teams agree to kid pitch (1–2 innings). Encourage pitching contests (no batters).
  • Batting: All players bat; continuous order. Each player should bat 1st or 2nd in the order at least once. 3 strikes equals an out (coaches may extend at-bats early season).
  • Fielding: Alternate infield/outfield. 1 Pitcher (fielding). Catchers: 1 inning at a time. egular or soft baseballs may be used (both teams must match).
  • Base Running: No leading or stealing. Must slide at 2nd/3rd/home. Station-to-station unless clear extra-base hit.
  • Umpires: None
  • Scorekeeping: No reporting
  • Playoffs: None

Prospect (2nd Grade / 8U)

  • Game Days: Tuesdays / Fridays
  • Number of Games: 10
  • Innings / Time Limit: 6 innings, no new inning after 1:45
  • Pitching: Mostly coach pitch; limited kid pitch if both teams agree. Encourage mound work in practices.
  • Batting: All players bat; continuous order. equals an out.. Each player should bat 1st or 2nd at least once.
  • Fielding: Alternate infield/outfield. Catchers are always used. Regular or soft baseballs may be used (both teams must match). Bats: USA Baseball stamp or one-piece wood.
  • Base Running: Must slide at 2nd/3rd/home; one base on overthrows (no scoring).
  • Umpires: None
  • Scorekeeping: No reporting
  • Playoffs: None

9U and Above

Rookie (3rd Grade / 9U)

View Rules
  • Game Days: Wednesdays / Saturdays
  • Number of Games: 12
  • Innings / Time Limit: 6 innings, no new inning after 1:45
  • Outs: 3 outs OR switch after 5 runs (not in last at-bat)
  • Pitching: Kid pitch, 46 ft. 3-inning limit per pitcher.
  • Batting: All players bat; continuous order. Cannot advance on the dropped 3rd strike.
  • Fielding: Rotate positions. Regular baseballs only. Bats: USA Baseball stamp or one-piece wood.
  • Base Running: No leading. No steals. Slide at 2nd/3rd/home. 1 base on overthrows (no scoring). Batter out on a dropped 3rd strike.
  • Umpires: 1
  • Scorekeeping: Yes, reported in TeamSnap (winning coach responsible; unreported = loss).
  • Playoffs: Top 8 teams. Points: Win = 3, Tie = 2, Loss = 1, 0 if not reported.
    • All regular season rules apply except:
    • No 5-Run Max
    • Weekday games are subject to a 5:30 PM start time
    • Games cannot end in a tie
      • If tied after 6 innings, a ghost runner will be placed on 2nd base (last batter in the lineup)
      • Note: If tied, the ghost runner will be utilizedbefore the 6th inning if daylight impedes completing 6 innings or 1:45 limit is approaching.
    • No new inning after 1:45, unless tied – then no time limit.

Minors (4th Grade / 10U)

  • Game Days: Tuesdays / Fridays
  • Number of Games: 12
  • Innings / Time Limit: 6 innings, no new inning after 1:45
  • Pitching: Kid pitch, 46 ft. 3-inning limit per pitcher.
  • Batting: All players bat; continuous order. Cannot advance on the dropped 3rd strike.
  • Fielding: Rotate positions. Regular baseballs. Bats: USA Baseball stamp or one-piece wood.
  • Base Running: No leading. Stealing allowed after the ball crosses the plate. One steal of home attempt (safe or out) per inning on a pitched ball.
  • Umpires: 1
  • Scorekeeping: Yes; the winning coach must report.
  • Playoffs: Top 8 teams. Points: Win = 3, Tie = 2, Loss = 1, 0 if not reported.
    • All regular season rules apply except:
    • Weekday games are subject to a 5:30 PM start time
    • Games cannot end in a tie
      • If tied after 6 innings, a ghost runner will be placed on 2nd base (last batter in the lineup)

  • Batting: All players bat; continuous order. Dropped 3rd strike is live.
  • Fielding: Rotate positions. Regular baseballs. Bats: USA Baseball stamp or one-piece wood.
  • Base Running: No leading. Stealing after the ball crosses the plate. No limit on steals of home. Dropped 3rd strike is live.
  • Umpires: 1–2
  • Scorekeeping: Yes, the winning coach must report.
  • Playoffs: All teams make the playoffs. The regular season will be used for seeding. Points: Win = 3, Tie = 2, Loss = 1, 0 if not reported.
    • All regular season rules apply except:
    • Weekday games are subject to a 5:30 PM start time
    • Games cannot end in a tie
      • If tied after 6 innings, a ghost runner will be placed on 2nd base (last batter in the lineup)

Juniors (7th–8th Grade / 13–14U)

  • Game Days: Thursdays / Saturdays
  • Number of Games: 12
  • Innings / Time Limit: 7 innings, no new inning after 2:00
  • Pitching: Kid pitch, 60 ft. 4-inning limit per pitcher.
  • Batting: All players bat; continuous order. Dropped 3rd strike is live
  • Fielding: Rotate positions. Regular baseballs. Bats: BBCOR, USA Baseball, or one-piece wood.
  • Base Running: Full baseball rules. Unlimited steals of home. Dropped 3rd strike is live.
  • Umpires: 2
  • Scorekeeping: Yes, the winning coach must report.
  • Playoffs: All teams. TRLL and non-TRLL brackets with the same seeding system. Points: Win = 3, Tie = 2, Loss = 1, 0 if not reported.
    • All regular season rules apply except:
    • Weekday games are subject to a 5:30 PM start time
    • Games cannot end in a tie
      • If tied after 7 innings, a ghost runner will be placed on 2nd base (last batter in the lineup)
      • Note: If tied, the ghost runner will be utilized before the 7th inning if daylight impedes completing 7 innings or the 2:00 limit is approaching.
    • No new inning after 2:00 unless tied—then no time limit.
